Grafting Fruit Trees for Sleeping Babies

Chris has been busy ensuring the future fruits of our garden. He has planted many fruit trees and is now grafting delicious and desirable fruit branches onto the existing wild plum and apple trees in our yard.
Thank you, Michael Sears, for teaching us the following:

Step 1: Slice the new branch nice and thin, leaving a small line of bark on either side.

Step 2: Slide the new branch(es) into the trunk like so (a slit has been made into the trunk). These are two Santa Rosa Plum branches stuck in a wild plum trunk.

Step 3: Coat the wound with grafting wax to prevent bacteria from entering.

Step 4: Wrap with tape.

Step 5: Go and kiss sleeping baby who will someday enjoy these fruits.

A Playdate

Avery was a solid playmate for friend, Sabine, today. He accepted all her rules of the game, showing his natural diplomacy and flexibility.

Here he is receiving her grocery store items.
CLICK HERE for live footage of their game.

"Avery drinks milk." Yes, this is true!

Then we went to a cafe, where Avery enjoyed the aroma of a latte

before passing out from social fatigue.

And more cuteness:

Avery's Third Week

Avery's week of many firsts:

His first nursing party with Maya and baby doll Rhena.

His first trip to the Chabot Space and Science Center for a viewing of the star cluster, M37, and Jupiter's three moons.

Waking from a nap on his belly with first pacifier.

His first night with a babysitter, Auntie Lauren (while we went on a date to the Freight and Salvage!)

One of his first family baths.

His first tree-buying trip.

His first ride with a peach and a pomegranate.

First day warm enough to forgo socks.

His first nap outside while we gardened.

Avery's first peach & nectarine tree!

Avery's First Doctor's Appointment

We waited for the doctor...

and checked up on the latest medical advice for extreme, unrelenting cuteness

We learned about what Avery should be eating

And we checked his blood pressure

And who knew that he should be getting up and playing hard 30-60 minutes per day?! He has hardly shown an interest. We also need to cut back on that carbonated breastmilk.
